A cold radiator on a January morning is frustrating. A boiler that cuts out repeatedly, a heat pump that runs without warming the house, or a strange smell near a gas appliance needs a calmer and more careful response. Knowing how to diagnose heating faults starts with recognising what is safe to check yourself and what must be left to a qualified engineer.

The aim is not to take your heating system apart. It is to gather useful clues, rule out simple causes and avoid making a minor fault more expensive. That usually means checking controls, pressure, power and visible signs before arranging a professional diagnosis.

Start with safety, not the boiler casing

If you smell gas, suspect a gas leak, or hear a loud hissing sound near a gas pipe or appliance, do not investigate further. Turn off the gas supply at the emergency control valve only if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, avoid switches and naked flames, leave the property, and contact the gas emergency service. Do not use a mobile phone inside the building.

A carbon monoxide alarm sounding is also an emergency. Move everyone into fresh air and seek urgent advice. Carbon monoxide has no colour or smell, so never rely on your senses alone. Headaches, dizziness, nausea and unusual tiredness, particularly when they improve away from home, should be taken seriously.

For any gas boiler fault, do not remove the case, touch internal components or attempt a repair. Gas appliances require the right training, testing equipment and legal certification. The same principle applies to electrical work inside an electric boiler, heat pump or heat interface unit.

How to diagnose heating faults from the symptoms

The pattern of the fault often points an engineer in the right direction. Make a note of when it happens, which rooms are affected, whether hot water still works and any fault code displayed on the appliance. A clear description can reduce diagnostic time and help prevent unnecessary replacement recommendations.

No heating and no hot water

First, check whether there is power to the appliance. Look at the fused spur beside the boiler or heating unit, and check the consumer unit for a tripped circuit. If a circuit trips again after being reset, leave it off and arrange an electrician or heating engineer as appropriate.

Next, confirm that the thermostat is calling for heat. Set it a few degrees above the current room temperature and check that it has working batteries if it is wireless. Review the timer or smart thermostat schedule too. A changed programme, holiday mode, low batteries or lost receiver connection can look exactly like a boiler breakdown.

On a boiler system, check the pressure gauge when the system is cold. Many sealed systems operate at roughly 1 to 1.5 bar, although the manufacturer’s guidance takes priority. Pressure below the recommended range can cause the boiler to lock out. If you have been shown how to repressurise your own system, do so only to the stated level. If pressure repeatedly falls, there may be a leak, faulty expansion vessel or pressure relief issue that needs professional attention.

Hot water works, but radiators stay cold

This commonly points to a controls, circulation or radiator issue rather than a complete boiler failure. Check that the central heating programme is on and that the thermostat is requesting heat. If only one or two radiators are cold, make sure their thermostatic radiator valves have not been turned down or become stuck after summer.

Feel the radiator carefully. Cold at the top but warm at the bottom often indicates trapped air and may improve with bleeding. Cold at the bottom with warmth at the top can indicate sludge or debris restricting flow. If several radiators are uneven, noisy or slow to warm, the system may need balancing, cleaning or pump investigation rather than repeated bleeding.

Do not keep adding water every time you bleed radiators. Each top-up introduces fresh water and oxygen, which can contribute to corrosion over time. If you are regularly losing pressure, the cause needs to be found.

Boiler switches on and off repeatedly

Short cycling means the appliance fires, stops and restarts more often than it should. It can be caused by restricted water flow, incorrect controls, a blocked filter, poor system balance, an undersized or badly configured system, or a component fault. On older systems, sludge is a common contributor.

Check that all relevant isolation valves are open and that several radiator valves are not closed at the same time. Beyond that, avoid adjustments to the boiler itself. Repeated short cycling wastes energy and puts unnecessary strain on components, so it is worth booking a diagnosis promptly.

Heat pump runs but the house feels cold

Air source heat pumps behave differently from gas boilers. They often run for longer at a lower flow temperature, especially in cold weather, so a system that is operating continuously is not automatically faulty. The concern is when it cannot maintain the target temperature, uses unusually high electricity, freezes excessively or displays persistent alarms.

Check the thermostat schedule, target temperature and any hot-water boost settings. Make sure furniture or curtains are not blocking radiators, and that outdoor unit airflow is not restricted by leaves, stored items or snow. Do not chip ice from the unit or interfere with its wiring, refrigerant lines or internal parts.

Performance also depends on correct system design. Small radiators, poor hydraulic balance, incorrect weather compensation settings or a poorly installed heat pump can leave a home cold even when the unit itself is technically running. Accurate fault finding should assess the whole heating system, not simply condemn the heat pump.

Heating works upstairs but not downstairs

Different temperatures between floors can be caused by air, poor balancing, a stuck valve, circulation problems or pipework restrictions. Start by checking the radiator valves in the affected rooms. If the issue affects a whole zone, note whether the zone valve moves when heating is requested and whether the thermostat for that area is set correctly.

Some larger homes and converted properties have separate heating zones. A fault with one thermostat, motorised valve or control circuit may leave part of the house cold while the rest works normally. This is a useful detail to give the engineer.

Make the simple checks that save time

Before requesting a repair, take five minutes to record the essentials. Check the display for an error code, photograph it if possible, and note the make and model of the appliance. Look for visible water beneath the boiler, cylinder, HIU, radiators or pipework. Check whether the condensate pipe outside is frozen during very cold weather, but do not pour boiling water over it. Warm water may be used cautiously where the pipe is accessible and safe, following the appliance manufacturer’s advice.

Also consider what changed before the fault started. A power cut, recent decorating, a smart thermostat installation, low temperatures, a radiator replacement or a previous pressure loss can all be relevant. Heating faults are often linked to changes in controls or system flow, not just a failed part.

Keep an eye on the pressure over several days if it is safe to do so. A single small drop after radiator bleeding may be normal. A steady decline, visible discharge from an external pipe, or frequent need to top up is not.

When a reset is reasonable – and when it is not

Many boilers allow a user reset after a temporary lockout. If the manual confirms the procedure and there is no gas smell, leak, burning smell or unusual noise, one reset can be sensible. If the fault returns, do not keep resetting it. Repeated resets can mask an underlying ignition, circulation, combustion or sensor issue.

The same applies to smart controls. Restarting a thermostat or checking its app connection may restore communication, but it will not fix a boiler that is losing pressure or a heat pump with a flow fault. Treat a reset as a check, not a repair.

Why professional fault finding matters

A good diagnosis looks beyond the first error code. An error may identify a symptom, such as low pressure or poor circulation, but not explain why it happened. Replacing parts without testing can be costly and may leave the original problem unresolved.

A qualified heating engineer can test combustion and gas safety on a boiler, assess system pressure and expansion, inspect pumps and valves, check electrical controls, and evaluate radiator flow and temperatures. For heat pumps, diagnosis may also involve examining settings, flow rates, defrost operation and the relationship between the unit, cylinder, controls and emitters.

Prevent the next heating fault

Annual servicing remains one of the best ways to catch developing issues before they become a no-heating callout. It can identify pressure concerns, poor combustion, worn components, blocked filters and control problems while the system is still running.

Between services, use your heating regularly enough to spot problems early, keep pressure within the recommended range, avoid covering boilers or heat pump outdoor units, and make sure carbon monoxide alarms are tested. If radiators take longer to heat each year, rooms are consistently uneven, or energy bills rise without a clear reason, arrange an assessment before winter arrives.

A heating system rarely fails without leaving clues. Notice those clues early, keep the checks safe and simple, and ask for a proper diagnosis when the answer is not obvious. That is the best route back to a warm, efficient home without paying for work you do not need.
