A heat pump that is still running but no longer keeping the house warm can be especially frustrating. The controls may look normal, yet rooms take longer to heat, radiators feel lukewarm and electricity use begins to climb. This heat pump repair example shows how a methodical diagnosis can identify the real cause, rather than replacing expensive parts based on a guess.

The scenario is representative of a domestic air source heat pump call-out in Essex. Every property, system design and fault is different, but the same approach applies: establish what has changed, test the system safely, correct the underlying issue and confirm that the heating is working efficiently before leaving.

The problem: heating that could not keep up

The homeowner had noticed a gradual decline in performance over several weeks. The collected debris was removed, the filter was reassembled correctly and the seals were checked. The heating system was then topped up where necessary and carefully vented to remove trapped air.

The circulating pump was adjusted to a setting appropriate for the property and the heating circuit. The engineer also balanced the radiators, making measured adjustments to the lockshield valves so that heat could reach the furthest rooms without overheating those closest to the plant area.

Finally, the system was run through a full heating cycle. Flow and return temperatures were checked again, along with radiator heat-up across the home. The revised readings showed improved circulation, and the property began warming more evenly. The thermostat reached its target without the heat pump operating continuously.

The repair itself was straightforward once the fault had been found. The value was in the diagnosis. Cleaning a filter alone may not resolve a heating issue if the pump, controls, radiator balance or system design are also contributing to poor performance.
