A boiler that has lost pressure can leave your radiators cold, stop hot water production and display a fault code just when you need heating most. Knowing how to repressurise boiler pressure can often get a sealed central heating system running again, but it must be done carefully. Adding too much water, or repeatedly topping up a system with an unresolved leak, can create a larger and more expensive problem.

Most modern gas and electric boilers operate as sealed systems. They need the right amount of water pressure to circulate heated water around your radiators and pipework. For many homes, restoring the pressure is a straightforward task. The key is knowing what normal looks like, using the correct filling arrangement and recognising when it is time to call a heating engineer.

Check the boiler pressure before you start

Look at the pressure gauge or digital display on the front of your boiler. When the heating is cold, the normal pressure is usually between 1 and 1.5 bar. Your boiler handbook will confirm the manufacturer’s recommended range, which should always take priority.

If the reading is below 1 bar, or the display shows a low-pressure warning, the boiler may need repressurising. Some boilers stop working at around 0.5 bar as a safety measure. Do not assume every fault code means low pressure, though. Check the display and handbook first rather than adding water automatically.

It is best to check pressure when the system is cool. Pressure rises as radiators heat up, often by around 0.5 bar. A boiler reading 1.3 bar when cold may reach close to 2 bar during normal operation, which is generally fine. Repressurising a hot system can take it above the safe operating range.

How to repressurise a boiler using a filling loop

Many boilers have an external filling loop beneath the boiler or nearby. This is commonly a short, flexible braided hose connecting two pipes, with a valve at each end. In some installations, the hose is only fitted when needed and stored elsewhere after use.

Before touching any valves, switch the boiler off and allow it to cool if it has been running. Place a towel beneath the pipework in case a small amount of water escapes. Then follow this process:

  1. Check that the filling loop is securely attached at both ends. If it is detachable, make sure any rubber washers are present and seated correctly.
  2. Turn both filling-loop valves slowly. Depending on the model, these may be small lever valves, taps or screwdriver-operated valves. You should hear water entering the system.
  3. Watch the pressure gauge continuously. Stop when it reaches around 1 to 1.5 bar while the system is cold, unless your manufacturer gives a different figure.
  4. Close both valves firmly, but do not force them. The sound of water entering should stop.
  5. Turn the boiler back on and check that the fault code or low-pressure warning has cleared. Run the heating and recheck the pressure once the system has warmed and then cooled again.

Take your time. The most common mistake is walking away while the filling loop is open. Overpressurising can cause water to discharge from the safety relief pipe outside, often through a small copper pipe near ground level.

If your boiler has an internal filling key or lever

Some boiler manufacturers use an integrated filling arrangement rather than an external braided hose. You may see a plastic key, a small lever or a pair of controls built into the underside of the boiler casing.

The principle is the same: introduce water slowly and stop at the recommended cold pressure. However, the exact sequence varies between makes and models. On certain systems, a key must be inserted and turned before a filling tap can be opened. On others, a lever moves into a filling position. Use the instructions supplied with your boiler rather than guessing, and never remove the boiler casing to look for controls.

What pressure is too high?

If the gauge goes above 2 bar while the boiler is cold, you have probably added more water than needed. Do not continue using the filling loop. A reading around 2.5 to 3 bar may trigger the pressure relief valve, causing water to escape outside.

Reducing pressure usually involves bleeding a small amount of water from a radiator, ideally after the system has cooled. Put a cloth and shallow container beneath the radiator bleed valve, open it slightly with a radiator key, and close it as soon as the pressure returns to the correct range. If you are unsure, it is safer to arrange an engineer visit than risk water damage or a seized bleed valve.

Why boiler pressure keeps dropping

Repressurising is useful when pressure has fallen gradually after radiators have been bled or following minor system maintenance. It should not become a weekly routine. A sealed system does not normally use up water.

Pressure that repeatedly drops can point to a slow leak from a radiator valve, pipe joint, towel rail or concealed section of pipework. Look for staining, damp patches, corrosion around valves and drips beneath the boiler. A leak may be small enough to evaporate before it becomes obvious, particularly on warm pipes.

The issue can also be inside the boiler. A faulty expansion vessel, pressure relief valve or heat exchanger may affect system pressure. If water is regularly dripping from the external copper discharge pipe, this deserves prompt attention. Do not cap, block or interfere with that pipe, as it is a safety component.

Adding fresh water again and again introduces oxygen and minerals into the heating system. Over time, this can encourage internal corrosion, sludge and reduced radiator performance. Finding and fixing the cause is more cost-effective than continuously topping up the pressure.

When not to repressurise the boiler yourself

Stop and seek professional help if you can smell gas, suspect a gas leak, see significant water leaking from the boiler, or find that the pressure rises rapidly whenever the heating comes on. If you smell gas, do not operate electrical switches or use flames. Turn off the gas supply only if it is safe to do so, open windows and contact the appropriate emergency gas service.

You should also avoid DIY work if the filling loop is missing, damaged or difficult to identify. There may be more than one valve beneath the boiler, and opening the wrong one can cause a leak. Never remove the boiler case or attempt to adjust internal components. Gas boiler repairs and servicing should be carried out by a suitably qualified, Gas Safe registered engineer.

Homes with a heat interface unit, communal heating arrangement, air source heat pump or unusual hybrid system may have different pressure controls. These systems can still have sealed heating circuits, but the filling procedure and expected readings are not always the same as a standard combi boiler. Check the unit documentation or ask an engineer before proceeding.

A few checks after repressurising

Once the boiler is back in operation, check that all radiators heat evenly and that the gauge remains stable. If you have recently bled radiators, it is normal for pressure to fall slightly afterwards, as air has been released. A single small top-up may be needed.

If some radiators remain cold at the top, there may still be air in the system. If they are cold at the bottom, sludge or poor circulation could be the cause instead. Repressurising alone will not fix these problems, and repeatedly increasing pressure will not improve heat distribution.

Make a note of the pressure reading when the system is cold and again after heating has been on for an hour. This gives a useful picture of how the system is behaving. A large rise from cold to hot can indicate an expansion vessel issue, while a steady fall over several days suggests water is escaping somewhere.

Keep your heating system protected

A quick pressure check every month, and before the colder Essex weather arrives, can help prevent an inconvenient no-heating callout. It is also worth checking after decorating near radiators, moving furniture around pipework or bleeding a radiator.
